multi 4 Chinese Lion Dancers-Vic-NSW-QldThe lion dance originated in China close to a thousand years ago. The lion is traditionally regarded as a guardian creature. It is featured in Buddist lore, being the mount of Manjusri. There are different variations of the lion dance in other Asian cultures including mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Okinawa, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore, with each region possessing their own styles. Chinese lion dances can be broadly categorised into two styles, Northern and Southern . Northern dance was used as entertainment for the imperial court. The northern lion is usually red, orange, and yellow (sometimes with green fur for the female lion), shaggy in appearance, with a golden head. The northern dance is acrobatic and is mainly performed as entertainment. Southern dance is more symbolic. It is usually performed as a ceremony to exorcise evil spirits and to summon luck and fortune. The southern lion exhibits a wide variety of colour and has a distinctive head with large eyes, a mirror on the forehead, and a single horn at center of the head. The lion dance also sybolises the myth of the Chinese new year The Lion dance is often confused with the Chinese Dragon Dance, which features a team of around ten or more dancers. The Lion Dance usually consists of two people. |

All are authentic in design in every way and all hand made. They are a group of people who are located in Melbourne and the state of Victoria who specialise in Ancient Classical and Hellenistic Greek re-enactment. The group's focus is to study, replicate and perform with military and civilian equipment from the period of 500-200 BC. They pride ourselves on the fact of having realistic and internationally updated knowledge on Ancient Greek culture of this period. Together with our companions/associates the Sydney Ancients, we have made professional appearances in film and international commercial advertisements using the unique Greek Hoplite Warrior imagery. A major aim is to make aware to the general public that Greek culture not only lead the ancient world in philosophy, democracy, art and citizenship but also the genius of military prowess, arms technology and application on the ancient battlefield. This ability and determination to repel invaders over the centuries earned great respect and enabled Greek culture to flourish and spread through the Mediterranean world, inspiring the emerging Roman Republic. The imagery of Greek Hoplite Warriors seems to have international appeal and encapsulates the beginnings of early European cultural determination and sense of galvanizing order out of chaos. School children or adults who may or may not have been exposed to literature of the Illiad, Odysseus or Alexander the Great can easily identify with this imagery and instantly recognize the symbolism of Greek struggle for independence and freedom. It was formed by Rene in the early 90’s and grew from a one-piece act (Rene on his own. specialising in Viennese Heurigen Musik.) to a 3-piece band, called Aureka. The original instrumentation of button accordion/keyboard, bass and guitar formed the basis of the Austrian music genre. Eventually the band grew to a 6-piece band, and the addition of other instruments, such as trumpet, clarinet/saxophone and drums/percussion provided the opportunity for expansion in style and also the change in name to OOmpapa. When asked, why the name OOmpapa, the answer is always at the ready: “Because our music is an exciting mix of central European country and folk music (Austrian, German, Dutch, Slovenian, Croatian, Italian and Spanish, ideally suited for dancing), but the cherry in the cocktail is the addition of Latin, 60’s Rock, Blues and Soul , Reggae and light Jazz. OOmpapa has an outstanding record for providing entertainment for ethnic and non-ethnic dance functions but the band is perhaps best known for its performances at the Melbourne Oktoberfest. Continental Drift-MelbourneContinental Drift, a string quartet with a difference! Playing light classical, beautiful ambient background plus jazz & latin styles. They also play Tango, Gypsy, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Greek, Italian and Irish (just for fun). The group will tailor the music to suit the requirements of your audience and your venue. Continental Drift, also has a completely mobile set-up which means it can play anywhere outdoors and in a large venue can change position several times if needed, The band is also happy to play acoustically if that is more suitable. The band loves to play gypsy music because of the combination of instruments and their common attraction towards the beautiful melodies, dramatic mood swings and high energy inherent in this Eastern European musical style. They have found a wide range of audiences responded positively to the music because of its haunting melodies, passion and liveliness. The band has also pursued the very gypsy tradition of serenading people at their tables and attempting any special requests thrown their way. The barriers between the band and the listeners breakdown - the audience often joins in singing and are more willing to get up and dance. |
Because of the diverse groups of people this band plays for, other European music crept in. Hence the equally exciting styles of Tango, Jewish, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Italian, Greek, Irish, and Latin are explored. Equally important, Continental Drift plays Classical music, beautiful ambient music and swinging Jazz and Latin Styles, tailoring the mood of the function to suit the venue and client, (ranging from beach shirts at poolside parties to black tie functions). |
